Everyday, useful things 3D printing is genuinely good at — and where the idea of a printer in every household comes from.
Akshay Deshpande — Founder
MetaFuse3D was founded in 2022 with a stated mission: make 3D printing economical and essential for every household, develop an ecosystem for affordable 3D printing, and generate awareness of the technology. This article is about what that looks like in practice.
When a household object breaks, the failure is usually one small part: a knob, a clip, a hose adapter, a latch, a battery cover. The rest of the appliance is fine. But the manufacturer has often discontinued the model, or will only sell the whole assembly.
A printed replacement changes that arithmetic. If the part can be measured or scanned, it can be remade — in a tougher material than the original, often, since the original was chosen to be cheap rather than durable.
• Repairs: discontinued knobs and handles, curtain sliders, wall brackets, battery compartment covers, clips for things that have lost their clip.
• Organisation: modular drawer inserts, under-desk mounts for cables and headphones, shelf brackets sized to your actual shelf rather than a standard one.
• Decor: lampshades, lithophanes, planters with the drainage arrangement you actually want, wall panels.
• Kitchen tools: cookie cutters, measuring scoops, spice rack fittings, jar openers — printed in a material chosen for food contact.
• Teaching: working gearboxes, planetary gear demonstrations, robot grippers, models that make a mechanical principle something a child can turn with their hands.
Owning a machine is one route. The other is to use somebody else’s. Through ModelForge you can browse models, configure colour and material with a live 3D preview, or upload your own file — and have the part made on our machines rather than yours.
That is the ecosystem part of the mission: the technology being available to people, whether or not there is a printer in the room.
Drop a file into ModelForge, configure colour and material with a live 3D preview, and order it printed on our machines.
