Scanning, designing, printing and moulding — what each step actually does, and why having them together matters.
MetaFuse3D
MetaFuse3D runs four capabilities in-house: 3D scanning, 3D designing, 3D printing and injection moulding. This is what each one contributes on the way from an idea to a finished part.
Some projects start with a physical object rather than a drawing: a part with no surviving blueprint, a component that has broken, a shape taken from life. Scanning captures that geometry as a dense cloud of surface points.
The point cloud is then cleaned up and turned into a mesh — a watertight surface a CAD package can work with.
A scanned mesh is a record of a shape, not an editable model. Design work turns it into one: real features, real dimensions, and geometry you can change.
This is also where design for additive manufacturing happens — setting wall thicknesses that print reliably, adding fillets and ribs where load will go, reducing overhangs so less support material is needed, and orienting the part so its strong direction lines up with its loads.
The finished model goes to the machines. Which machine depends on the part: FDM where size, toughness or colour lead, resin where fine detail and surface finish lead.
What comes off the plate is a physical object you can hold, fit, test and argue about — which is a different quality of feedback from a render.
Printing stops being the economical answer at some quantity. Past that point, moulding takes over: a tool is made, and parts come out of it far faster and cheaper per unit.
Because the design, the printed prototypes and the tooling all sit in the same place, the handover between prototype and production does not involve re-explaining the part to somebody new.
Tell us what you are making and we will come back on process, material and what the fleet can hold for it.
